18th-century mechanics Bank

Door Restoration

At AP Lohmann General Contracting / Fine Carpentry, we restored the historic Mechanics Bank doors in Philadelphia, an 18th-century structure associated with Frank Furness. Using traditional linseed oil paints and varnishes, we revived the wood and refinished the original hardware to preserve its authentic character and architectural integrity.

18th-century bank in Old City, Philadelphia

On 27 North 3rd Street in Philadelphia, PA, we carefully restored the existing doors of an 18th-century bank building. Now owned by Ministry of Awe and operating as an art museum, the structure retains its historic presence through features like its monumental entry doors—each standing approximately 16 feet tall and 3 1/2 inches thick, a testament to the scale and craftsmanship of the period.

The project entailed stripping failing finishes, completing necessary wood repairs, and refinishing with linseed oil to protect and preserve the material while allowing it to breathe. The original hardware was meticulously refinished—cleaned, polished, and restored to its original character—maintaining authenticity while improving function and longevity.

Every step of the process prioritized the retention of original fabric, avoiding unnecessary replacement and honoring the integrity of the structure. The result is a set of doors that remain true to their historic character, now stabilized and protected to perform for decades to come.
